Breakthrough Energy Ventures was founded in 2015 by Bill Gates and manages over $3.5bn across three funds. BEV I closed at $1bn in 2016, BEV II at $1.25bn in 2021 and BEV III at $839m in 2024. Backers include Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg, Richard Branson and Mukesh Ambani. The 123-company portfolio across 15-plus countries includes nine unicorns organised around electricity, transportation, manufacturing, buildings and food. Holdings include Type One Energy, Antora, Verdox, 44.01 and Commonwealth Fusion.
